I thought I was old when we started the band.  Twenty-one, facing growing up, and trying to preserve some youth in songs – The Young & The Desperate, Young Offenders, Young Lions, etc.  The “Constant Teens”, you know… In a lot of ways, the eleven years that we were active as a band was a suspended adolescence.  At our best, we consecrated youth in the true rock and roll spirit.  Wild, ecstatic moments, pure physical and spiritual energy, free of any past or future.  We held on to that for as long as we could.
Gradually, an awareness of the passing of time, the changes occurring around us, and personal physical and emotional needs crept into the songs – Soon Enough, Our Age, Windy Road (Best get new dreams – these old dreams won’t last). There were some heavy times in those last few years – each member of the family was being pulled in their own direction, trying to figure out who we were apart from each other.  Every family comes to this at some point, and everyone deals with it in their own way.
On a cold night in the winter of 2010, walking down Mont-Royal, I called Doug, who I’d been playing in bands with since early high school, and said, “I can’t do this anymore.”  I was unsure what kind of response this statement would get, but Doug was kind and understanding, and we spoke as brothers do.  That was a basic fact with the Cons: we were as real with each other as people could be.  The band played a few shows that year, fulfilled what responsibilities we could, and then we went our separate ways.
I believe it had to happen this way.  We each had to figure some shit out on our own.  The six months after the Cons stopped playing was one of the most fucked up periods in my life.  I realized pretty quickly that I didn’t really know how to play music outside of The Constantines.  We had learned to be musicians together.  There were no real goodbyes, but there was a complicated mourning process, figuring out that there were other things to devote oneself to.  Trying to write a resume was a nightmare.  Life went on.
A great irony in all of this, is that I’ve become more aware of what the Cons meant to people in the years since the band last played together, than I ever was while we were active. I suppose that’s no grand revelation – you often have to get outside of something to get a picture of what it is.  We are grateful that people love this band so much.  We love it too. In the past year, we’ve had perfect occasions to reconnect with one another, to play together in various forms, and to talk again as brothers do.  Timing has never been the Cons’ greatest strength, and as we watched the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of Shine A Light pass by, we joked together, saying, “well, maybe we’ll do something for the 11th…”
True to the Cons’ decision making process, the more something made us laugh, the better an idea it seemed.  And support came in from some wonderful places.  We’ve been talking a lot lately, and we’ve made some plans.
What it all comes down to is this:  There is too much love and too much life in this music for it to only exist in the past.  We’re happy to announce that The Constantines – Will Kidman, Steve Lambke, Doug MacGregor, Bry Webb and Dallas Wehrle – will be playing some shows this summer, leading up to the 11th Anniversary Reissue of Shine A Light.
Details will be coming your way soon, but we wanted to give you the news ourselves, and say thanks for everything. Your kind words have meant a lot to all of us, and we look forward to seeing you again.
Time can be overcome,

BW/Constantines

  1. Fuck. Yes. Cons.
Saw you guys once in early 2006 and still have VIVID memories of the show. In the years following I only became more of a fan and was pretty beat up when you guys announced your break.

Long shot I know but an Australian tour would be unreal.

  2. Congratulations on being teenagers, again! It’s been a while since Call the Office, Tom, and CHRW. I have to admit, I was always skeptical about the cheeky answers to the band name question, but never got it until now. Thanks for cluing us slow ones in. 2001 was good, what an album. Someone offered me a wet nap at a show one time…Then, I remember you mentioning you had just finished Nighttime/Anytime upstairs, then we got to hear it, the intensity and how the guitar parts fit together, the bass, the drums. That was one of those concert moments you never forget. My first Hillside…and stumbling around Toronto trying to find St.Patrick Sq to pick up a tshirt, thinking it was St.Patrick, giving up at the Rex, then figuring it out, with help. I remember Lee’s the first time too, young lions and someone’s Birthday. I’m glad perspective can grow…anyway, all the best this summer. Life is funny. Some things change, some stay the same. Some things should stay, I don’t know if they do.

  3. One last moment. Sometimes you are just in the right place at the right time. Western pretty much sucked for me. Shows at Call The Office and the Embassy were among the few good times I had there. In 3rd year I finally clued into CHRW, Ice Cream Headache, etc. In 4th year I decided I should volunteer, get out there, do something. It was fleeting, but I managed to be around when this nice guy let me play the new Elliott Smith 7″ I wanted to hear, and he talked about pinback. Tom Everett was this real character, well he was. A few minutes later, Tom looks over towards this guy and says something like ‘but your band just sucks.’ He and his co-host burst into laughter and this guy has a half smile on his face. I am clueless. A couple weeks later Tom suggests I might want to go check out this great new band. I missed one show, then I went. It took a while, but I’m glad I listened. The sucky band comment always makes me smile. Take care.

  4. Great to hear, Shine a Light (and your other music) still means a lot to me and I’m sure lots of others. It’s the fact that you have some good that means it’s hard to kill – if you band was shit, you wouldn’t think twice!

  5. This is stunningly good news. Constantine’s might be the only band I ever heard for the first time in a live setting and they immediately became one of my favourites. It’s a good day in rock and roll land.

  6. First saw the Cons in November 2005 at the Middle East in Boston on tour with the Hold Steady. Rekindled my dormant Rock ‘n’ Roll spirit. Made me look at cities, love, and the night in ways I’d forgotten. Listened to Tournament of Hearts through a fog in Berlin. Caught the Cons every chance I could. Stood by the stage at TTs weeping to Do What You Can Do. Gutted when the break-up came but understood, ten years is a long time. Goosebumps now reading about a summer tour. Will travel to Guelph if necessary.

  7. Like hearing an old friend is moving home. I saw you with the Weakerthans in an opera house in Edmonton in 2009(?), your music hasn’t left me since. Thanks for everything.

  8. With the Constantines being my favourite band, i really hope you play some dates in the UK.

Infact where I live, York, we have a statue to Constantine The Great. imagine the photo ops there! Constantines The Better!!

  9. I’m nearly in tears. I first saw you boys at Spaceland in LA, where you played my request (Little Instruments) then later I saw you guys in LA again at the Knitting Factory, opening for The Hold Steady and I chatted with Bry afterwards and he put me on the list (+1!) in San Diego the following night. Of course I went. It was sick. Of course. Then I saw you in Brooklyn visiting my folks for Passover a little while later. Everytime I saw you guys I got so excited and worked up (and drunk) that I would throw up once I got home. And I wouldn’t change a thing. Now, whenever I go to a show my wife still warns me, “Don’t go Constantines!” I try not to. But if you guys come to Seattle I’ll be there. And you can bet your ass I will go Constantines. Easily one of my favorite bands of all time. Thank you for such great albums. For such great memories. For such meaningful music. Please post tour dates!

  10. Your music was and is such a massive part of life and growing up. I came to your shows as many times as I could when you played Toronto and those shows still stand out as some of the best I’ve ever been to. I am SO happy to hear this news and can’t wait to see you again!

  11. This makes me very happy! Wish I could make it to a show, hope you guys come back to the states someday too.
